RICHMOND RCMP Special Victims Unit has concluded a multi-year investigation into a Richmond man convicted of possessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

The investigation began on June 27, 2021, when Richmond RCMP officers arrested Robert Grant Wilson at a cafe in Richmond after patrons observed him accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material on an electronic device. The device was seized at the time of his arrest.

In 2023, the Richmond RCMP Special Victims Unit assumed conduct of the investigation. A warrant was issued and Wilson was arrested on August 1, 2024. A cellphone and a laptop computer were seized during the arrest. A warrant was obtained to search the electronic devices, and investigators located a collection of thousands of child sexual abuse and exploitation material images.

A dedicated investigation file was created in 2025 to document the material located on the seized devices, and further charges were recommended. On August 1, 2025, Wilson was arrested on an outstanding warrant. A new cell phone was located in his possession during the arrest.

On August 5, 2025, Wilson pled guilty to one count of possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material, in relation to the June 2021 and August 2024 seizures. He was released on bail pending sentencing.

Following his release on bail, the cell phone seized on August 1, 2025, was analysed, and found to contain a new collection of thousands of images and videos of child sexual abuse and exploitation material. A new investigative file was opened, and a warrant was issued for Wilson’s arrest.

On October 30, 2025, Wilson was arrested and held in custody pending the conclusion of court proceedings. The investigation involved members from Richmond RCMP frontline policing, the General Investigation Section, Digital Field Technician Section, Serious Crime Unit, and the Special Victims Unit.

On February 25, 2026, Wilson pled guilty to an additional count of possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material (in relation to the August 2025 seizure). He received a sentence of 300 days imprisonment, less 188 days credit for time served, and a further sentence of 14 months less one day, to be served consecutively. The effective sentence was therefore 535 days, or approximately 17.5 months.

Upon release from custody, Wilson was ordered to register with the National Sex Offender Registry for a period of 20 years, submit a DNA sample, and abide by a three-year probation order. He is also subject to a 15-year court order prohibiting contact with children and restricting his access to places where children are expected to be.

“This investigation reflects the commitment of our officers to protecting vulnerable persons and holding offenders accountable,” says Inspector Ed Yoshiyama, Richmond RCMP Operations Support Officer. “The conclusion of this case demonstrates the importance of coordinated investigative work and the persistence of our officers in pursuing complex digital evidence.”
