MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s opposition leaders met Monday with elders from Hawiye clan at the residence of former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed in Mogadishu, where they announced plans for what they described as a “national salvation” effort as the president’s term nears its end next month.
The gathering drew most prominent opposition figures and, in a notable development, was joined by former National Intelligence chief Abdullahi Mohamed Sanbalolshe, once considered a close ally of the sitting president.
Former Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble told reporters the meeting focused on the country’s political uncertainty at a critical moment. He warned that Somalia stands at a dangerous crossroads, with the parliamentary term already expired and the president’s mandate set to lapse in the coming weeks.
Roble repeatedly emphasized that the concept of national salvation dominated the discussions, calling for broad participation from Somali citizens to prevent a slide into chaos and lawlessness once the presidential term ends.
In Mogadishu, the phrase “national salvation” carries a distinct political weight. It is commonly understood as a reference to armed mobilization efforts mounted by the opposition during the past two election cycles, actions that previously blocked attempts by sitting presidents to extend their time in office.
