St Mary’s College began their Penn Relays campaign with a win in Heat 11 on Friday, April 24, advancing to the international final on Saturday. The quarter of Ethan Doxerie, Tai LaForce, Joshua Matthew and Jonathan Alexander is the first from Saint Lucia to compete at this prestigious event.

SMC clocked 44.33 seconds in the opening round of the High School Boys’ 4×100, Event 325, finishing ahead of eight American schools. Among more than 100 registered teams, the Saint Lucians had the 16th-fastest time. They were the seventh fastest international team in their section, with Jamaica’s Cornwall College leading overall at 41.91.

The nine fastest teams from Events 325-330 on Friday qualified for Saturday’s Championship Final.

The next nine international teams will compete in Event 586 on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. As of early Friday afternoon, with results still pending, SMC were unlikely to advance. They performed well among more than 500 high school teams, primarily from the US and the Caribbean.

“I’m extremely elated that the boys thus far have given a very good account of themselves. This is one hurdle out of the way,” said SMC principal Neal Fontenelle. “They were able to win the heat quite comfortably.

“The boys are in good spirits. They’re confident, as you’d expect, now that they’ve won the heat. The initial jitters, I think, have evaporated. They’re now immersing themselves in the culture at the University of Pennsylvania, mingling and so on. They have some downtime because the next event for them is tomorrow when they compete in… the heats of the 4x400m. So all in all it’s been a good experience thus far.”

On Saturday, at 8:50 a.m., SMC will contest the opening round of the High School Boys’ 4×400 (Event 509).
