*Long before Emmy wins and starring roles, Sterling K. Brown was a fresh graduate drowning in nearly $100,000 in debt and making promises to a higher power. Now at 50, he says those promises still guide everything he does.

After completing his studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2001, Brown found himself facing a mountain of financial pressure with nothing but faith and conviction to lean on. Rather than abandon his path, he struck a personal bargain. “I said to God, ‘If I could just pay my bills doing this thing that I love, I would be deeply appreciative,'” he recalled during an interview with Yahoo’s Off the Cuff, noting that “God slash the universe kept its end of the bargain.”

What carried him through those lean years was an unshakable internal certainty about his calling. “I knew I was doing what I was put on the planet to do,” Brown said. “When you have that level of knowing, it allows you to endure. … It doesn’t matter if anybody else knows it or not. I do.”

Brown celebrated his 50th birthday on April 5, and the milestone has brought a sharper awareness of time and how he chooses to use it. Currently starring in Hulu’s hit thriller “Paradise,” he remains professionally active but says his mindset has shifted away from chasing opportunity and toward something more deliberate.

“You are more cognizant of your mortality and how much time you have,” he noted, “and how you want to spend that time.”

That intentionality extends into his personal life as well. Brown and his wife, actress Ryan Michelle Bathe, recently marked 20 years of marriage with a wellness-centered getaway, a reflection of where his priorities now sit. He also completed a three-day water-only fast as a way of resetting physically and mentally.

“I felt great… And it wasn’t because I wanted to lose weight or anything,” he said. “I just kind of wanted to get all the crap out of my body so I could start new.”
