Tanzania endorses the adoption of AU 2027 Budget

ADDIS ABABA: TANZANIA has endorsed the adoption of the African Union (AU) 2027 Budget, while calling for stronger public financial management, accountability and results-based budgeting to ensure the efficient use of the Union’s resources.

The position was presented by the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Said Shaib Mussa, during the 49th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 28–29, 2026.

Ambassador Mussa led the Tanzanian delegation at the meeting on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Mahmoud Thabit Kombo (MP).

Speaking during the debate on the AU’s 2027 Budget, Ambassador Mussa stressed the importance of ensuring that the Union’s resources are managed efficiently to deliver tangible benefits to African citizens while reducing reliance on external donors.

He further emphasised that recruitment, institutional expansion and the implementation of AU programmes should be aligned with the Union’s actual financial capacity to safeguard its long-term sustainability.

During discussions on institutional reforms and the audit report, Tanzania called for the continued strengthening of internal audit systems, financial management, procurement processes and reporting mechanisms. The country also underscored the need for the full implementation of audit recommendations to enhance transparency, integrity and operational efficiency across AU institutions.

Meanwhile, Tanzania commended the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for its contribution to strengthening health security across the continent.

The country also urged AU member states to increase domestic investment in the health sector, expand the local production of medicines and medical supplies, and deepen cooperation to strengthen Africa’s capacity to prevent and respond to disease outbreaks, in line with the implementation of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
