DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA and Malaysia have agreed to deepen cooperation in higher education through university partnerships, joint research, academic exchanges, scholarships, student mobility and collaboration in science and technology.

The agreement was highlighted during a session on “Strengthening Higher Education Partnership Between Tanzania and Malaysia” held in Dar es Salaam.

The event was organised by Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) under Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education in collaboration with Global Education Link Ltd (GEL).

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Prof Daniel Mushi, said the visit by the Malaysian delegation comes at a crucial time as Tanzania seeks to internationalise and strengthen its higher education system.

He said the engagement provided an opportunity for both countries to explore cooperation that would benefit students, lecturers and institutions through joint programmes, knowledge exchange, research collaboration and capacity building.

According to Prof Mushi, Malaysia’s success in transforming its economy through investment in education, technology and skills development offers valuable lessons for Tanzania as it builds a competitive knowledge-based economy.

He emphasised the need to strengthen Tanzanian students’ competencies in science, mathematics, data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence, while also preparing them to compete in international academic environments.

Director of Higher Education, Prof Stephen Maluka, said the discussions focused on establishing formal partnerships between universities, ministries and education agencies in the two countries.

He noted that Tanzania is seeking long-term academic collaboration beyond student recruitment, including joint research, faculty exchanges, scholarship opportunities, curriculum development and academic mobility.

“Technology, data science and artificial intelligence are among the key areas where collaboration can help build local capacity and prepare graduates for a digital future,” he noted further.

Meanwhile, GEL Managing Director Abdulmalik Mollel said the initiative aims to build lasting education links between Tanzania and Malaysia.

“This partnership is about creating opportunities for students, researchers and institutions to work together and contribute to national development,” he explained.

Mr Mollel added that the Malaysian delegation and participating universities will meet students, parents and education stakeholders during the Study in Malaysia Exhibition at the Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel, where participants will receive information on academic programmes, admission requirements and scholarship opportunities.
