St. Louisan Jayson Tatum reached a special milestone on Friday night while helping lead the Boston Celtics to a big road playoff victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.
The former Chaminade College Prep All-American scored 25 points, including the 3,000th point of his playoff career in the Celtics’ 108-100 victory over the 76ers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference first round playoffs in Philadelphia. The Celtics took a 2-1 lead in the best of seven series.
Tatum became the fourth player in the Celtics franchise’s storied history to score at least 3,000 points in the playoffs. He joined former Celtic greats Larry Bird, John Havlicek and Kevin McHale on the list. He is also the second youngest player in NBA history to reach 3,000 playoff points, behind LeBron James.
In addition to his 25 points, he had four rebounds and seven assists in 42 minutes of action. Tatum hit a pair of 3-pointers in the closing minutes when the game was still in the balance. The biggest one came with 25 seconds left, giving the Celtics a 106-100 lead. Tatum scored 11 points in the fourth quarter on four of five shooting from the field and two for two from 3-point range.
Tatum also became the 15th player in NBA playoff history to reach at least 3,000 points, 1000 rebounds, and 500 assists. That list is a who’s who of NBA legends, including LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan, Kevin Durant, Karl Malone, Larry Bird, John Havlicek, Magic Johnson, Scottie Pippen and Wilt Chamberlain.
The series will resume with Game 4 on Sunday in Philadelphia at 6 p.m. (CT).
