A 15-year-old girl, Mary Imongot, was found hanging from a mango tree in Kakori village, Kabarwa sub-county in Bukedea district, eastern Uganda.

Imongot, a primary six pupil at Kakori primary school, was reportedly discovered hanging from the tree by community members early in the morning today, Thursday.

According to relatives, the tragic events began on Wednesday, May 13, when Imongot reportedly left home for the weekly market without the consent of her mother, Mary Ikiding, and returned late in the evening.

At around 7 pm, Ikiding allegedly found her daughter standing by the roadside in the company of several boys. Concerned about her daughter’s behaviour and safety, the mother reportedly took Imongot back home and disciplined her.

After the disciplinary incident, relatives said Imongot appeared calm and later joined the family for supper at around 9 pm. She later retired to their grass-thatched hut where she shared a room with her younger sister.

However, it is alleged that during the night, Imongot quietly left the house after sneaking away from her younger sister. She is believed to have taken a rope and hanged herself from a mango tree located outside the family home.

“When we woke up at around 6 am, we found Imongot hanging from the mango tree. We also noticed that she had tied a handkerchief around her face covering her eyes,” one relative recounted.

Ben Angura, the LC III chairperson of Kabarwa sub-county, said he rushed to the scene after learning about the incident and immediately instructed residents not to interfere with the area.

“When I arrived, I directed everyone not to touch anything until the police arrived. In such cases, it is the responsibility of police to remove the body and investigate the circumstances surrounding the death,” Angura said.

By 8:30 am, the body was still hanging at the scene as residents and family members waited for police officers to arrive.

Angura said he had already informed the police, who were expected to begin investigations into the incident.

Police had not yet released an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding Imongot’s death by the time of filing this report.
