*One of Hollywood’s most powerful franchises is heading back to Panem, and a brand new trailer is giving audiences their first real look at what’s coming.
“The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” is set to transport fans back to the dystopian world of Panem, this time 24 years before the events of the original “The Hunger Games.” According to the news release, the story picks up on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games — a pivotal chapter in Panem’s history known as the Second Quarter Quell — and promises to expand the mythology that has captivated audiences for years.
Francis Lawrence, who helmed several entries in the franchise, returns to the director’s chair for this installment. Billy Ray wrote the screenplay, adapting Suzanne Collins’ novel for the screen. Lawrence also joins producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson in bringing the project to life.

The film boasts one of the most impressive ensemble casts in the franchise’s history. Joseph Zada leads the cast alongside Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Mckenna Grace, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. The film has not yet received an official rating and is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on November 20, 2026.
The anticipation surrounding the film is firmly rooted in the franchise’s staggering commercial track record. “The Hunger Games” films have collectively grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide, cementing their place among the highest-grossing franchises in cinema history. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” brought in $424.67 million at the global box office, while “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” surpassed that with $750 million. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” added another $664.9 million to that total.
With a built-in global fanbase, a celebrated literary source, and a returning director who knows this world well, “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” arrives with considerable momentum heading into its November 2026 release.
