Tiffinie Cobb: A Legacy That Was Already Part of My Story

Long before I became a recipient of the Dr. Terence N. Thomas Scholarship, I knew the name Terry.

To my father, he wasn’t “Dr. Terence N. Thomas.” He was simply Terry—his best friend.

Growing up, I heard stories about their friendship. They played basketball together, rode motorcycles, worked in their family businesses during the summers, and shared dreams about the future. My father often spoke about Terry’s intelligence, generosity, and sense of humor. He also spoke about the devastating loss our community experienced when Terry’s life was cut short.

Years later, when I learned I had been selected as a recipient of the scholarship established in Terry’s honor, it felt deeply personal. I understood that I was receiving more than financial assistance. I was becoming part of a legacy that had already touched my family in a profound way.

At that stage in my life, the scholarship helped remove one of the many barriers students face while pursuing higher education. Like many recipients, I was focused on earning my degree and building a future. Looking back, I now realize the scholarship offered something even greater than financial support. It represented confidence—a belief that young people, when given opportunity and encouragement, can create meaningful change in the lives of others.

That belief has stayed with me throughout my career.

Whether serving in public health, leading strategy and evaluation initiatives, or now overseeing programs that help families achieve homeownership as Vice President of Programs at Acts Housing, I have always been drawn to work that creates opportunities for people and communities to thrive. While the settings have changed, the purpose has remained the same: to leave things better than I found them and to invest in others in ways that create lasting impact.

As I’ve grown professionally, I’ve come to appreciate that Terry’s legacy was never just about becoming a physician. It was about the kind of person he was and the values he embodied—generosity, excellence, compassion, and a belief that our lives should make a difference in the lives of others. The scholarship ensures those values continue to influence new generations of students, many of whom never had the opportunity to know him personally.

For me, that legacy comes full circle.

Today, my father and I have the privilege of celebrating Terry’s life together—he as a lifelong friend, and I as someone whose educational journey was made possible, in part, because of Terry’s enduring legacy. Few scholarship recipients have the opportunity to experience that connection, and I carry it with deep gratitude.

When I think about what this scholarship represents, I don’t think first about the financial support, although that mattered tremendously. I think about what it says to every recipient: Someone believes in you.

Sometimes, that’s all it takes to change the course of a life.

I hope to honor that belief by continuing to invest in others, just as Terry’s legacy has invested in me.
