Toss: “I’m A Rapper On The Core.” Toss has opened up about the creative thinking behind his collaboration with Nadia Nakai on their six-track EP, Do’s & Don’ts, revealing that bringing Amapiano and hip-hop together was never a difficult decision for him.

Speaking to SA Hip Hop Mag, the Amapiano star was asked whether he had any hesitation about merging his piano-driven sound with Nadia Nakai’s hip-hop approach. Toss quickly dismissed the idea, pointing to his own history as a rapper.

“Not really. I have a history in hip-hop. I’m a rapper, funny enough. I’m really a rapper on the core, so it wasn’t a hard decision to make,” Toss explained.

His response highlighted a side of his artistry that can sometimes be overshadowed by his success in Amapiano. While he has established himself as one of the genre’s recognisable names, Toss made it clear that hip-hop remains an important part of his musical identity.

Nadia’s artistry also played a major role in drawing him into the collaboration. Toss said he already knew what she could bring to the project and viewed the opportunity as a chance to challenge himself creatively.

“I know Braga is dope and that her creativity is crazy, honestly out of this world. I knew working with her would push me,” he said.

Rather than viewing the differences between their musical backgrounds as an obstacle, Toss embraced them as part of the appeal. For him, stepping into a different creative space was exactly what made the collaboration exciting. “It was a challenge, and I love challenges. I love challenging myself to show up and rise to the occasion,” he added.

That mindset became central to Do’s & Don’ts, a project that brings together two artists with distinct musical identities. Toss arrives with his Amapiano background and rap roots, while Nadia brings the hip-hop experience that has shaped her career.

The collaboration also reflects the increasingly fluid nature of South African music, where artists are moving between genres and finding new ways to connect their sounds. For Toss, working with Nadia was less about staying within familiar territory and more about discovering what could happen when he pushed himself.
