By Breaking Belize News Staff: Trinidadian national Rubindra Dale Rampersad will remain at the Belize Central Prison until at least August 28 after reaching a mediation agreement with Golden Bay Hotel to settle an outstanding bill of more than $11,000.
Rampersad, 46, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday represented by attorney Kimberly Wallace of Bradley’s Chambers, in the absence of attorney Darrell Bradley.
The court was informed that mediation between Rampersad and Golden Bay Hotel had resulted in an agreement under which he and his family will pay the hotel the full outstanding amount, approximately $11,470.24, on or before August 28, 2026. A representative of Golden Bay Hotel was present and confirmed the hotel’s agreement with the arrangement.
The Chief Magistrate accepted the mediation agreement and ordered that payment be made by the stipulated date. The prosecution has indicated that, once the terms of the agreement are satisfied, it intends to withdraw the criminal charge against Rampersad.
The matter was consequently adjourned until August 28. If the agreement is fulfilled, Rampersad is expected to be released and his passport, which has been held by the court as part of his bail conditions, returned to him.
Rampersad has been on remand since late May after being charged with making off without payment. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police previously confirmed that Rampersad was intercepted at the Philip Goldson International Airport on May 29 as he allegedly attempted to leave Belize after Golden Bay Hotel reported that he had departed without settling his bill. Public reporting at the time placed the outstanding amount at $11,470.24 following an approximately month-long stay at the Belize City hotel.
According to the allegations, Rampersad had booked a double room using a credit card, but attempts to process payment were unsuccessful. Hotel management alleged that he subsequently requested several extensions to his stay before leaving the property without making payment. Police later obtained statements, billing records and surveillance footage during their investigation.
Rampersad was later offered the possibility of bail subject to strict conditions, including securing a Belizean surety and confirming prepaid accommodation in Belize. He remained behind bars after failing to satisfy all of those requirements.
He is scheduled to return to court on August 28 for confirmation that the terms of the mediation agreement have been met.
