Two teenagers killed in Kisoro landslides

Two teenagers have been killed by landslides in Kisoro district in western Uganda, in an incident that also left two other people injured.

The deceased have been identified as Brenda Musoni, 14, and Eseri Mujawimana, 12, both residents of Bukerahe village in the same parish. The injured are Benon Mulema, 70, and his wife Avelina Mbaboneye, 60, the victims’ grandparents.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday at around 5:00 a.m. in Nyabiyonga village, Murora sub-county. According to Patrick Muhire, a local resident, the children had been visiting their grandparents, as they routinely do during school holidays.

He said that as the family slept, a landslide struck the house, partially burying it. The children are believed to have suffocated under the debris during a heavy downpour. Elly Maate, Kigezi region police spokesperson, said that despite the hilly terrain, local residents managed to retrieve the bodies.

The injured were rushed to Chahafi health centre IV for treatment. This is not the first fatal landslide in Murora sub-county. In May 2023, eight people were killed in similar incidents in Biizi and Gihuyaga villages.

Elsewhere in the region, three men were killed by floods on April 27 in Kyakabarisinga village, Ibanda parish, Nyarushanje sub-county in Rubabo county, Rukungiri district. The men had been burning charcoal in a valley when heavy rains forced them to seek shelter in a makeshift tarpaulin-covered structure.

Floodwaters from a prolonged downpour suddenly surged, sweeping away their belongings, including cooking utensils. As one of the men attempted to retrieve the items, the floods intensified and carried away the shelter where the other three had taken refuge.

Although one survivor raised the alarm and nearby residents responded, rescue efforts were unsuccessful. Kigezi region is among several parts of Uganda currently experiencing heavy rainfall.
