By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 51-year-old Belize City stevedore was arraigned Wednesday on a theft charge after he was accused of stealing an assortment of items valued at $280.
Lynton Gilbert Sutherland, of Fabers Road, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded not guilty to theft.
Police allege that on September 9, 2026, Sutherland stole 20 ballpoint pens valued at $50, four reading glasses valued at $25, 20 face masks valued at $50, two cans of mosquito repellent valued at $30, two pairs of sunshades valued at $100 and a spanner valued at $25.
The items have a combined value of $280.
There was no objection to bail and Sutherland was granted bail in the sum of $1,500. As part of his bail conditions, he was placed on a curfew requiring him to remain indoors between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
The court was also informed that Sutherland owed $795 in outstanding court debt. He was ordered to make a payment before being granted additional time to settle the balance.
Sutherland paid $85 toward the outstanding amount and was given until October 9, 2026, to pay the remainder.
He is also due back in court on October 9 in relation to the theft charge.
