*Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton is speaking out about the recovery stretch that has tested him far beyond the basketball court. The 26-year-old has been out since rupturing his right Achilles tendon during last year’s NBA Finals, and a subsequent shingles diagnosis has thrown yet another serious obstacle into his path.

Addressing reporters at the Pacers facility on April 13, Haliburton made clear the illness has been anything but routine. While many shingles sufferers develop the rash on their midsection, his case presented directly on his face. “My dad had it during the Finals, on his stomach, and a lot of people get it there, but mine’s on my face,” he said, PEOPLE reports.

The earliest weeks brought some of the worst symptoms, leaving his eye severely swollen and barely functional. “It was all over my face,” Haliburton said. “They told me I’d be really itchy, but I wasn’t itchy for the first two weeks, I just had a bad rash. Once the rash went away, the itching came, and it’s been miserable.” He added that the constant irritation has cost him part of his eyebrow, and his eye is “always swollen.”

An aggressive medication regimen has so far failed to bring him meaningful relief. “I have good days and bad days, but for the most part, it’s bad days. So, it has not been any fun. I’m still honestly dealing with it,” he admitted.

Two months of nerve pain have followed the rash, with no clear end in sight. The illness has also driven additional weight gain on top of the roughly 30 pounds he had already added while rehabilitating his Achilles. “It’s obviously caused me to gain weight and look a little bigger, and so that’s been a topic of conversation through social media and stuff, but what can you do?” he said.

Shingles, medically referred to as herpes zoster, is the same virus responsible for chickenpox. Once a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains inactive in the body and can resurface later in life, triggering a painful blistering rash that typically appears on one side of the face or body.

Haliburton’s case reflects some of the more serious complications the condition can produce. Between 10 and 18 percent of patients develop postherpetic neuralgia, a form of chronic nerve pain that can linger for months or even years. In roughly 10 to 25 percent of cases, the virus targets a nerve near the eye, which can lead to prolonged pain and, in rare instances, permanent vision loss.

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle confirmed the shingles diagnosis in February, telling reporters that Haliburton “will make a full recovery.”
