Uganda Athletics outlined a pathway to begin a national coach licensing system as the Coaches’ Association ushered in a new executive chaired by Aggrey Ogol.
The Association also has Grace Chesang as vice chairperson, Kassim Latigo (secretary), Musa Kifaya (vice secretary), Pius Ochiaje (Treasurer) and Shaban Alua as publicity secretary.
According to Namayo Mawerere, the Uganda Athletics publicity secretary, this move to license the coaches was introduced during the inaugural National Coaches’ Forum hosted at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Coach licensing is a formal certification process required by Uganda Athletics to ensure coaches meet minimum standards of safety, ethics, and technical knowledge.
The process will consequently involve World Athletics and Uganda Athletics tiered coaching courses that range from (e.g., Elementary to Academy License) that provide permits for training specific age groups and competition levels.
At the end of the process a formal practicing license will subsequently be issued by Uganda Athletics (UA) authorizing a qualified coach to practice in Uganda for a period specified.
A license may however be withdrawn by the licensor’s decision if the coach fails to meet any of the conditions for the issuing of a license are no longer obtainable.
The day-lon coaches’ forum was hosted at Mandela National Stadium. It also undertook refresher sessions on the roles and responsibilities of coaches in the development of athletes and athletics in the country.
The participants were also introduced to the amended UA Safeguarding Policy which must be adhered to by all coaches and athletics stakeholders and the online registration system.
In another development, the Uganda Coaches’ Association (UCA) ushered in a new Executive Committee at the end of the forum.
The entire executive members were elected unopposed to lead the coaches’ body for a 4‑year term.
