VIP police officer arrested for alleged Oshakati shooting

A police sergeant (34) attached to the Namibian police’s very important persons (VIP) subdivision has been arrested after allegedly shooting a man at a bar at Oshakati last week.

The suspect, sergeant Wilhelm Simon, who is based outside the Oshana region, was reportedly on leave at the time of the incident and was not on official duty.

Oshana police head of criminal investigations deputy commissioner John Mwatongwe has confirmed the incident, saying the shooting occurred during an altercation involving two individuals.

“It was a fight between two people. The officer is not from the Oshana region. It is a police officer who was on leave and was on his own,” Mwatongwe says.

According to Mwatongwe, the victim (34) was not involved in the altercation but was at the bar when he was struck by what police believe was a stray bullet.

Simon has been charged with attempted murder, negligent handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm within a municipal area.

Mwatongwe says the officer appeared in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court, where he was denied bail.

The matter was postponed to 21 September to allow the police to continue with their investigations, he says.
