Hands down the proposal of the year! This left us blubbering in the best way. South Africa, you beautiful thing.
Cape Town, South Africa (12 May 2026) – Another proposal for the books! Move over, France and Italy, South Africa just became the most romantic country in the world. And it’s all because of this one special moment.
Ubuntu moves in the most beautiful ways. Recently, it showed up in a wave for a couple in one of the most significant moments of their lives – their proposal.
Aqib decided to pop the question to Laiqah over a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean in Cape Town. Neither he nor his now bride-to-be expected to be met with the magic that surrounded them when she said ‘yes!’
It was like a proper fairytale. Hundreds of strangers gathered around them on the beach, unplanned and spontaneous. South Africans saw the moment unfold and instead of looking away, chose to celebrate. There was singing and dancing. A wave of love swept the newly engaged couple up in their most precious moment.
The video of the proposal has gone viral – 287,000 views and counting. Watch it below!

It was all captured by Bianca Asher, a wedding and elopement photographer based in the Mother City. Asher uploaded the video online, and it was met with an even greater outpouring of love – South Africans and strangers across the world were all moved by Laiqah and Aqib’s incredible moment.
“South Africa is not just a country it’s a feeling. This is special, congratulations” wrote one commenter.
“Our Southern African culture and sense of community is everything. ‘I am because you are'” wrote another.
“Imagine not being South African” remarked a fellow saffer.
“The song goes ‘the bride is ours, we agree. She is really ours’ usually sang at unions by the husbands family to welcome the bride,” one comment shared in insight.

After watching their magical proposal go viral, Laiqah left the below message for her fellow South Africans.
“We are so overwhelmed with the abundance of love and warmth received from each and every single one of you who were there and created this magical experience for us, and to those of who have engaged so meaningfully with the moment being captured. I could never have imagined this in my wildest dreams. We are eternally grateful. I wish I could hug every single person there. To be a South African woman is a feeling like no other. Thank you so much for embracing us the way you did. Thank you for giving us the most chilling proposal ever. Thank you to my man for planning the most incredible moment, and for thinking of EVERYTHING I would have never thought of and more. You are my greatest gift”
And there it is, the South Africa we know and love. The radiating magic of this country and its people. South Africans have a way of showing up for each other when it matters most, wrapping our arms around one another and reminding each other that you are never alone in your struggle or your joy! Laiqah and Aqib got engaged in the embrace of a nation. That’s ubuntu, that’s us, and that’s home.
