The young West Indies players scored a 25-run victory against Ireland on January 25 in the Super Six phase of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, extending the winning streak at the World Cup. The rain-affected win came via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method at the High Performance Oval in Namibia, calling for focus and grit from the young men as they continue to pursue World Cup glory.

Having won the toss, the Windies elected to bat first. The batters struggled throughout, except for Jewel Andrew, who used his international experience to hold one end. Andrew went on to anchor the innings, scoring a gritty 66 that ensured the Windies did not collapse and allowed the team to amass 234 all out.

In reply, the Irish began their innings strongly. Openers James West and Freddie Ogibly put on 47 runs for the first wicket, followed by another partnership worth 35 runs between West and Adam Lecky. The Windies needed to turn the game in their favor, and spin provided the breakthrough.

The spin duo of Vitel Lawes (2-41) and Micah McKenzie (4-36) built pressure with a series of dot balls. Ireland fell under sustained pressure, leading to wickets being thrown away. They continued to struggle until rain arrived and brought the contest to an end. The umpires decided to call the game off, declaring the West Indies winners.

The Windies will need to improve going forward despite this victory. They face the stern test of a red-hot Australian team on January 28 as they strive to reach the semi-finals.
