Uganda’s multiple Olympic and world champion Joshua Cheptegei claimed bronze at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark on Sunday.
Cheptegei ran a Personal Best of 58:26 but finished behind Andreas Almgren (58:06) of Sweden and Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir (58:11).
It is the first road medal for Cheptegei, who has two Olympic and three world titles on the track and a world cross-country title.
“During the race, I struggled a bit with my left foot, which I hurt 10 days ago, but I had good treatment, and I only felt a little bit of pain during the race,” he said, as quoted by World Athletics.
USA’s Conner Mantz and Japan’s Tomoya Ogikubo ran ahead early, but the quartet of Kipkorir, Almgren, Ethiopia’s Tadese Worku and Cheptegei broke away and reached 15km in 41:47.
Worku would later drop off, and the leading trio hit the 20km mark in 55:20 as the battle for gold ramped up.
The battle for gold remained between Almgren and Kipkorir as Cheptegei was left behind, but he held on for third place ahead of Worku.
