FAZ President Keith Mweemba has raised concerns over the financial struggles of Mpulungu Harbour FC which recently lost its sponsorship mid-season.

Mweemba who described the situation in which the only National League team in the region is in as unfortunate, appealed to local businesses to step in and help football in Northern Province.

“It is unfortunate that a team like Mpulungu Harbour FC, full of promise could lose sponsorship in the middle of the season. This should serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders,” Mweemba lamented.

Mweemba said this during the FAZ Northern Province AGM at Kizya Lodge in Kasama.

The FAZ Chief warned that talented players will now be leaving the province in search of opportunities elsewhere. “Northern Province football needs your support. The continued outflow of talent is weakening the local game,” he said.

Mweemba also emphasized that investing in football is more than a commercial decision but a contribution to youth development, community growth and national unity.

“Without adequate sponsorship, clubs struggle to sustain themselves, and players are left with no choice but to move where opportunities exist,” Mweemba added.

The FAZ President reassured stakeholders that his administration is working on a sustainable strategy to support clubs with grants and equipment. “We are working on a strategy that will make our grants and equipment support sustainable,” he said.

And Mweemba called on newly -elected Vice Chairperson for the Province to help the executive committee in the Province to promote unity among members of the football family.

And Northern Province Minister Leonard Mbao says he is concerned that the province currently has no team competing in the country’s top football leagues, describing the situation as a major setback for local sport.
