*The Oklahoma City Thunder officially have a back-to-back MVP. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA) has won the 2025-26 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player award. The announcement arrived earlier today (05-17-26), with Shams Charania breaking the news ahead of the planned Prime Video broadcast.
SGA becomes the 14th player in NBA history to win consecutive MVP trophies. At just 27 years old, he is cementing himself as the face of the league. He finished ahead of finalists Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets and Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs.
Historic Regular Season Stats
SGA’s second MVP award rests on a foundation of historic efficiency and scoring. During the 2025-26 regular season, he averaged 31.1 points per game on 55.3 percent shooting from the field. He is the first guard in NBA history to average more than 30 points per game at that efficiency level.
He also contributed 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game. SGA played in 68 games and scored 20 or more points in every single contest. He led the entire league in clutch points. The Thunder finished as the number one seed in the Western Conference and enter the 2026 playoffs as a title favorite.
Clutch Player of the Year
Beyond the MVP, SGA also won Clutch Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season. He delivered one of the most dominant late-game performances in recent memory. In games within five points in the final five minutes or overtime, SGA led the NBA with 175 total clutch points. He averaged 6.5 clutch points per game, marking the second-highest single-season mark in league history.
He shot 51.5 percent from the field in clutch situations. The Thunder posted a 20-7 record in clutch games when he played. SGA also led the league in clutch field goals made with 52 and ranked among the top three all-time for a single season in advanced clutch rating. His ability to close games proved vital for OKC’s rise into superteam status.
SGA’s Winning Mindset
In his acceptance speech for the award, SGA reflected on his journey. He said: “When I picked up a basketball when I was nine years old, playing AAU, I never sat there like, ‘I want to be an All-Star, I want to be an MVP.’ I sat there like I want to win this tournament. Winning is everything. If you don’t win, none of it matters. That’s just how I see the game.”
The quote underscores his focus on team success rather than individual glory. He consistently credits his teammates and the organization for his rise.
Social media quickly exploded after the announcement. Bleacher Report posted: “SGA IS YOUR BACK-TO-BACK MVP 31.1 PPG | 6.6 APG | 4.3 RPG Another one for SGA .” Fans celebrated the milestone, with many calling it “legend status.”
One user wrote: “Shai Gilgeous-Alexander goes back-to-back MVP the league really just confirmed what the season already showed: he’s HIM.” Some critics debated the decision, arguing that the award favors team success over pure individual talent. Others complained about Shams Charania leaking the news early. However, the overwhelming sentiment praised SGA’s quiet, efficient dominance and the Thunder’s promising future. As the 2026 playoffs begin, SGA now aims to add an NBA championship to his growing trophy case.
