For many vulnerable little ones, a foster family is the only hope they have at getting to experience the feeling of being chosen, protected and deeply loved. And while not everyone is called to be a foster parent, everyone has a role to play in supporting them.
Cape Town, South Africa (15 May 2026) – If there is one thing every child should experience, regardless of where and how they entered this world, it is the warmth and love of a family.
As South Africa prepares to observe National Child Protection Week (29 May – 5 June) and the global community marks World Foster Day (31 May), Kin Culture is calling on communities to support and champion the incredible families in foster care.
Kin Culture, a local child protection organisation focused on family-based foster care, believes that the solution to the orphan crisis lies not in institutions but in the warmth of a stable home.
“Every child belongs in a family,” says the Kin Culture team.
“But for a family to thrive, they need a community standing behind them.”
The State of Vulnerable Children in South Africa:
- South Africa is home to an estimated 3 to 5 million orphans and vulnerable children.
- Thousands of children are currently growing up in institutions rather than family environments.
- Approximately one in three children in South Africa has experienced some form of abuse.
- Kin Culture currently supports roughly 170 children placed with over 110 foster families across the Western Cape.
A Community-focused solution
Kin Culture is a designated child protection organisation working in partnership with the Department of Social Development. It operates within a professional legal framework and gathers professionals and communities to provide support services to foster families.
“We work alongside the medical profession, therapy professionals and local churches to provide practical support.”
2026 Campaign: Join Hands for Tangible Support
The bottom line for this year’s Child Protection Week and World Foster Day campaign is a call for people to join hands in providing tangible support. Kin Culture believes that while not everyone is called to be a foster parent, everyone has a role to play.
The 2026 campaign focuses on practical intervention, like providing a meal, supporting education, helping families to ‘belong’ and even something as simple as a prayer or a message.
“Our call is for communities to champion and support foster families.”
You are invited to contact Kin Culture directly to find ways of getting involved in caring for foster families in your area.
