There’s no ‘good’ time for a storm to hit an animal shelter, but with winter here, the damage left behind at TEARS Animal Rescue has hit especially hard. Supporters are rallying to help rebuild!
Cape Town, South Africa (17 May 2026) – Strong winds tore through parts of TEARS Animal Rescue’s Sunnydale shelter, as Cape Town braved the recent storms.
Roofing sheets have been totally ripped off, kennels, walls and doors have been damaged, and debris has been scattered across the shelter grounds.
Some dogs had to be moved into temporary spaces inside the clinic overnight while staff worked through the storm to keep them warm and dry. Thankfully, every animal and staff member made it through safely.
“Thankfully, no dogs or staff members were injured during the storm and our team ensured that every dog was given a warm dry blanket and a safe place to sleep overnight,” TEARS shared afterwards.
By morning, the full extent of the damage was measured.
“In the aftermath of the storm it became clear that the intense weather had caused devastating damage to our kennel facilities,” the organisation explained.
It is sadly another difficult setback after a string of tough seasons that have included fires, flooding and emergency evacuations. Hope and compassion have always helped carry the rescue organisation over the years.
Messages of support have started pouring in online as TEARS begins the process of repairing damaged kennel roofs, replacing broken walls and making the spaces safe again before the coldest part of winter settles in.
“For the animals in our care, these kennels are more than just structures, they are a place of safety, comfort and protection while they wait for loving homes.”
Most animals in TEARS’ care often already come from difficult situations. TEARS becomes the place where they learn what safety feels like. Where they have the care they need and eventually, hopefully, a family.
The storm caused significant damage. TEARS is now asking for help to rebuild and weatherproof the damaged areas so the animals in their care stay protected through winter and beyond.
“The storm may have damaged our kennels, but together we can make them better than ever and ensure every animal at TEARS has a safe place to sleep at night.”
