Following her bold adventure on the rugged Pondo Trail, Angela Blackwell and her guide dog Jaydee have not only made history but have further raised an incredible R500,000 to fund a whole new generation of life-changing guide dogs!
Cape Town, South Africa (03 June 2026) – Cape Town adventurer and campaign founder Angela Blackwell has officially reached her ambitious R500,000 fundraising goal for the South African Guide Dogs Association!
You may recall some of the features we’ve shared on her journey, and now, following months of grassroots fundraising, media support, and the completion of the extraordinary 65km Pondo Trail on South Africa’s Wild Coast alongside her guide dog, Jaydee, Angela has successfully accomplished her mission!
The fundraising campaign, Paws on the Path, was inspired by Angela’s own life-changing partnership with Jaydee after losing her central vision in 2021 due to retinitis pigmentosa.
Earlier this year, Angela and Jaydee became the first blind handler and guide dog team to complete the iconic Pondo Trail with Wild Child Africa, navigating rugged cliffs, steep descents, river crossings, forests, and remote coastline together.
“What impressed me most wasn’t the distance covered, but the trust, resilience and determination on display every single day. Angela and Jaydee took on one of South Africa’s most rugged trails with remarkable courage and achieved something truly extraordinary,” shared Luke Powers, Head Guide, Wild Child Africa.
The campaign has now raised enough funding to sponsor the raising and training of four future guide dogs, helping more South Africans who are blind or visually impaired gain independence, mobility, and confidence through guide dog partnerships. Additional funds will also be allocated to other programmes that support and develop guide dog trainers.
“I’m completely blown away by the generosity, kindness, and belief shown by so many people,” says Angela.
“What started as one woman and her guide dog taking on an extraordinary stretch of coastline became something much bigger; a community of people coming together to create life-changing impact.”
Throughout the campaign, Angela’s story captured public attention through radio interviews, online features, and social media storytelling, resonating with audiences through its message of courage, trust, adaptation, and possibility.
“The Pondo Trail was a masterclass in trust. Trust in my guide dog, trust in myself, trust in my guides, and trust in the land beneath my feet. But reaching this fundraising target has reminded me that there is also something incredibly powerful about collective trust – people believing in a cause, in awareness, and in each other,” Angela shares.
The South African Guide Dogs Association says the success of the campaign demonstrates the impact community-driven fundraising can have.
“Angela’s journey has inspired thousands of people across South Africa,” says Jade Carlson, National Marketing Manager, South African Guide Dogs Association for the Blind.
“Not only did she challenge perceptions around blindness and adventure, but through Paws on the Path she has directly contributed to changing lives. The sponsorship of four future guide dogs is an outstanding achievement and a testament to the power of purpose, perseverance, and community.”
While the fundraising goal has been reached, Angela says the broader mission of awareness continues: leveraging her growing platform and upcoming speaking engagements to share messages of resilience, positivity, and reinvention.
“Reaching this goal means that four future guide dogs will one day change four lives forever. That is the real legacy of this journey – not the kilometres walked, but the independence, mobility, and freedom that will now be passed on to someone else.”
The success of Paws on the Path stands as a powerful example of what can happen when storytelling, community, and purpose come together, proving that even the most daunting paths can be walked one courageous step at a time.
