Chairman of the Delta State Football Association, Chief Godwin Adode, has praised the steady progress of football in the state, describing this year’s Arthur Ferdinand Federation Cup as strong evidence that the sport is enjoying remarkable growth.

Speaking with journalists in Kwale after the semi-final matches, Adode said the level of competition displayed throughout the tournament showed that football standards in Delta State had improved significantly.

According to him, the difference in quality between amateur teams and professional or semi-professional sides has narrowed considerably.

He noted that the performances of the underdog teams proved that grassroots football in the state is thriving, with many emerging sides now capable of competing strongly against established clubs.

The FA chairman pointed out that while defending champions Warri Wolves and last year’s finalists DE Sapele Lions eventually booked places in the final, both teams had to battle hard to get there.

DE Sapele Lions were pushed to the limit by Morak FC of Uvwie in the semi-final before narrowly progressing via a penalty shootout, while Warri Wolves also had to overcome a determined challenge on their path to the title decider.

Adode commended all participating teams for the quality of football they brought to the competition and for showcasing the rich pool of talent available across Delta State.

He also revealed that the Delta State Football Association is already working on plans to provide support for club sides in the state, with the aim of helping them become more sustainable and competitive.

The football administrator further applauded Arthur Ferdinand Engineering for sponsoring the tournament, saying the partnership has brought fresh excitement to the competition and will contribute positively to football development in the state.

Looking ahead to the grand finale, Adode disclosed that the final match will take place on April 26 at the Southern Delta University Stadium in Ozoro.

He added that several former Super Eagles stars are expected to grace the occasion, including Taribo West, Victor Agali, Victor Ikpeba, Edema Fuludu, Samson Siasia and Sam Sodje.

The final is scheduled to kick off at 12 noon, with fans expected to witness an exciting showdown between Warri Wolves and DE Sapele Lions in what promises to be a fitting end to a successful tournament.
