The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District has begun warning some commercial customers that their sewer service could be disconnected for chronic nonpayment as unpaid bills exceed $100 million.
MSD sent notices Tuesday giving an initial group of businesses 30 days to pay their balances or establish payment plans. The utility said it is the first time in its 70-year history that it has moved toward disconnecting sewer service.
The effort will begin with large commercial accounts, though residential customers could eventually face disconnection. MSD also offers payment plans and discounted rates for qualifying residents.
