Alfred, Thompson-Herah to clash in Hungary

Fresh from running the third-fastest 200m time ever, Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred has a packed week ahead. Alfred, who remains unbeaten this season, will compete again with several World and Olympic champions in Hungary and England.

Alfred ran a blistering 21.51 seconds in Monaco to beat 2024 Olympic gold medallist Gabby Thomas. On Tuesday, the Saint Lucian will face Jamaica’s multiple-time Olympic champion, Elaine Thompson-Herah, over 100m at the Gyulai István Memorial.

The race, set for 12:40 p.m. AST, will also feature Tina Clayton. The 21-year-old Jamaican won silver at the 2025 World Championships, finishing ahead of Alfred in Tokyo. Clayton is one of only nine women this year to run under 10.9 seconds.

The women’s 100m is one of the most anticipated events at the Gyulai István Memorial, part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold. The 200m at the Novuna London Athletics Meet, set for Saturday, July 18 at London Stadium, is also drawing a lot of attention.

At London Stadium, Alfred returns as the defending champion and meet record holder after setting a national record of 21.71 seconds there in 2025. She will face Thomas again, along with former World champion Dina Asher-Smith, who used to train with Alfred.

Saint Lucia’s double Olympic medallist is also set to face two-time Olympic gold medallist Shaunae Miller-Uibo of The Bahamas, Olympic Games and World Championships silver medallist Amy Hunt of Great Britain, and newly crowned British champion Success Eduan.
