The story behind Spain Star Lamine Yamal’s unique name

By Zoila Palma:  As Spain advanced to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has continued to capture global attention—not only for his performances on the field but also for the story behind his name.

The Barcelona forward, who recently celebrated his 19th birthday, is officially named Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana.

Like most Spaniards, he carries two surnames—Nasraoui from his Moroccan-born father, Mounir Nasraoui, and Ebana from his Equatorial Guinea-born mother, Sheila Ebana. Professionally, however, he is known simply as Lamine Yamal.

His first names were chosen as a gesture of gratitude. When Yamal was born in 2007, his young parents reportedly received significant financial and personal support from two family friends named Lamine and Yamal. To thank them for their kindness, they named their son after both men.

The names also have Arabic origins. “Lamine” is derived from Al Amin, meaning “honest” or “trustworthy,” while “Yamal” is a variation of Jamal, meaning “beauty,” “grace,” or “charm.”

Today, the name Lamine Yamal has become synonymous with one of football’s brightest young stars as he continues to shine for both Spain and Barcelona.
