Following another fine outing in Martinique last weekend, Denver Alphonse Jr is preparing to represent Saint Lucia internationally in the coming days. Alphonse was second in his division and 13th overall at the Grand Prix UCS, his last warmup before the Road Continental Pan Am Championships from March 17-22.

Before jetting off to Cordoba, Colombia, the 18-year-old had his strongest finish of the year last weekend, finishing just over seven minutes behind the winner, Kyllian Boscher of VC Diamantinois. Boscher was a repeat winner in the 93.9-kilometre race held around Saint-Esprit, Martinique.

For Alphonse, the Under-23 silver medallist for ASC Karaïbes Culture Sports, this result from a field of 59 athletes represented continued growth and progress.

“Last weekend’s race meant a lot to me,” he told St. Lucia Times. “Because it’s showing that I am improving and meeting the standards of cycling in Martinique. And I will continue working hard for more improvement.

“With regard to Pan American Championships, my goal is to do my best, compete hard, and cross that finishing line, because I will be going up against top continental riders.”

The Continental Pan-Am Championships will involve competition for Under-19, Under-23, and Elite male and female athletes. Alphonse will take on the Under-23 36-km time trial on Wednesday, March 18, then the 160.8-km road race on Sunday, March 21.
