On Wednesday morning, on the team’s training grounds in Marietta, the vibes were good as Atlanta United players laughed and joked during a passing drill. One could assume the good vibes were carrying over from the last time the team played a match.
Last Saturday, Atlanta United Paraguayan midfielder Matias Galarza hugged teammate Saba Lobjanidze like one would hug a loved one: tightly with eyes closed. It meant something to be in that moment, and Galarza was savoring it. The moment in question: Atlanta United was back. Keyword: United.
Lobjanidze had just scored his second goal of the match during the 50th minute. A goal that gave Atlanta United a 3-1 lead over visiting CF Montreal, one of the worst teams in Major League Soccer. A goal that would ultimately seal the win for the home team.

The current win streak improved to three games following the victory, and the win could be described as a team effort, with Alexey Miranchuk and Cooper Sanchez each picking up assists, and Emmanuel Latte Lath scoring a goal. Even goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos made several key saves during the match. It was the definition of a team win.
Asked about playing well in front of the home fans, Miranchuk said it was the least they could do for one of the league’s best support systems.
“We can give 100% on the field,” he said. “Overall, football is played for the people who have supported us in good times and bad times. It is really important to play together in difficult times.”
Miranchuk is in the middle of a career year in MLS. In 10 matches this season, he has 5 goals (his career high for Atlanta United is 6 goals in 31 matches during the 2025 season) and two assists. More importantly, the current team captain hasn’t received a yellow or red card.
Sanchez, a star in the making, was surrounded by members of the press in the locker room following the victory. That had not been the case over the past couple of games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, all of which were losses.
“I feel like this week has been great,” Sanchez said after the match. Nine points.”
Atlanta United didn’t pick up nine points in the Eastern Conference standings last week, but the victories in Toronto (2-1 on April 25) and against CF Montreal on Saturday night. The victory in Charlotte was in the U.S. Open Cup.
It can officially be nine points if they win their match against L.A. Galaxy on Saturday, May 9, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Galaxy will come into Atlanta following a 1-1 draw with Vancouver last weekend.
Winning at home in front of the announced 34,703 in attendance was important to Atlanta United manager Gerardo “Tata ” Martino. The team hasn’t played in front of a sellout crowd in months.
“The team owed it to the fans,” said Martino after the game. “We talked about it before the game.”
Atlanta United defender Matt Edwards, a former Atlanta United Academy player, was more succinct about playing well in front of the fans: “They don’t owe us anything, and we owe them everything.”
“It means so much to play well at home, and we felt like we owed it to them,” Edwards said.
Up Next: Here’s to winning more matches at home, but the next two matches will be on the road. Atlanta United will be spending some time in the Sunshine State as they play consecutive matches against rival Orlando City SC. The first, on Saturday, May 16, will be a regular-season meeting, and the next will be a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match.
Atlanta United’s all-time record against Orlando City is 12-7-6, according to data from fbref.com.
