BAC dissolves Sanyang VDC, urges peaceful transfer of power
In a letter addressed to Botto Gaye, chairman Sanyang Village Development Committee, Brikama Area Council disclosed that its decision to dissolve the VDC is premised on Section 96, Sub-section (1) of the Local Government Act 2002, and urged the outgoing executives to cooperate and facilitate the establishment of a new executive committee for the Village Development Committee (VDC).The development comes on the heels of a petition filed by the Sanyang Development Fund (SDF), citing numerous corruption allegations levelled against the Sanyang Village Development Committee (SVDC) who are said to have embezzled more than D90 million.Among other alleged corrupt practices, SDF disclosed that D10–12 million lost on sales of juvenile fishing, D17,040,000 (Seventeen million and forty thousand dalasis) on Community Land Revenues; D2–3 million loss from the operation of Sanyang Eco-Lodge Operations; D1 million loss from taxes and rentals; D45.5 million loss on GACH Mining Shares; D1.8 million loss from Fish Meal Factory; D360, 000 loss from sales of community ambulance; D529, 000 loss from Night Sand Mining Operations; D9.5 million loss from recent Beach Land Sale."Acting under the provisions of Section 96, Sub-section (1) of the Local Government Act 2002; the Council, at its General Sitting held on 14th May 2026, resolved to dissolve your Executive Committee effective immediately," a letter from BAC stated.It added: "In light of the above, your cooperation and collaboration in facilitating the establishment of a new executive committee for the Village Development Committee (VDC) is hereby requested," BAC recalled that at the Monthly General Council Sitting held on 14th May 2026, a resolution seeking the dissolution of the Sanyang Village Development Committee (VDC) was tabled by the WDC/VDC Conflict Resolution Adhoc Committee of the Council, noting that the motion for adoption was moved by the Hon Councillor for Bijilo Ward and seconded by the Hon Councillor for Sintet Ward before its subsequent adoptation by a majority vote of members through a show of hands.Brikama Area Council further disclosed that the dissolution of the Sanyang Village Development Committee (VDC) is premised on absolute and total disregard of the VDC's constitution governing the executive, adding that Council therefore supports and adopts the motion for the dissolution of the Sanyang Village Development Committee (VDC)."Brikama Area Council implores all relevant stakeholders to adhere to and encourage collaboration towards the effective implementation of this resolution accordingly," Council submitted.Council also disclosed that following the submission of the petition by Sanyang Development Fund, Petition Committee of Council had engaged all stakeholders on the matter, hinting that both members of SDF, SVDC, members of the Sanyang Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) as well as the elders of Sanyang Bulundala and the Alkalo before any decision was taken.It noted that following an alleged conflict of interest attributed to some committee members including Momodou Chatty Cham in the initial investigation into SDF petition against the Sanyang VDC by WDC/VDC conflict resolution committee members of Council, the committee was reassigned to re-conduct an investigation, while excluding the alleged conflicted members and co-opted some non-committee members, notably, the Clerk, the VDC/WDC desk officer.
