By Zoila Palma: Belize reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening global health cooperation and voiced support for Taiwan’s participation in international health discussions during remarks delivered at the 79th World Health Assembly by Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard.
Minister Bernard aligned Belize with the statement delivered on behalf of CARICOM and reflected on the gathering’s theme, “Reshaping Global Health: A Shared Responsibility.”
Bernard stated that “resilient health systems are built through solidarity, partnership, and equitable cooperation,” while emphasizing Belize’s commitment to prevention and healthcare investment.
Minister Bernard highlighted several achievements within Belize’s healthcare sector, including progress in vaccination coverage and workforce development. Bernard noted that “for the first time, Belize achieved a national HPV vaccination coverage rate of 75.9 percent,” describing it as an important milestone in protecting future generations from cervical cancer.
He also pointed to expanded training opportunities for nurses and the specialization of Belizean doctors in critical areas of medicine.
Bernard further stated that Belize is continuing efforts to modernize its healthcare system through digital transformation, stronger primary healthcare services, expanded dialysis access, and improved emergency preparedness.
Bernard also reiterated Belize’s support for the meaningful participation of Taiwan in the World Health Organization and other global health mechanisms.
“Taiwan continues to make valuable contributions to international public health through technical cooperation, innovation, and longstanding support to Belize and other partner countries,” Bernard stated.
The minister added that “the exclusion of Taiwan from global health discussions weakens our collective capacity to respond to shared health challenges.”
Bernard maintained that United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not prevent Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the United Nations system and specialized agencies.
He concluded by stressing that “global health is a shared responsibility,” and said Belize remains ready to work with international partners to advance equity, resilience, and healthier futures for all.
