Belize City woman granted $3,000 bail after allegedly pretending to be High Court clerk and swindling 60-year-old retiree out of $2,500

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City woman accused of falsely claiming to be connected to the Belize High Court and promising to secure legal land documents for a retiree is tonight out on bail after being arraigned on a charge of obtaining property by deception.

According to police, a 60-year-old retiree reported that she paid Jennifer Arana a total of $2,500 between September 2025 and February 2026 for assistance in obtaining a Grant of Administration related to property left behind by her deceased daughter in Sandhill.

The retiree told investigators that she met Arana at the Belize High Court on Regent Street, where Arana allegedly introduced herself as a clerk working at the High Court and claimed she could assist with the legal process for a fee. Humes said the two agreed that the documents would be completed by the end of February 2026.

Police say the retiree made monthly cash payments to Arana at the High Court building, totaling $2,500. However, after the final payment in February, the retiree allegedly lost communication with Arana and never received the promised documents or a refund.

Investigators later checked with the Belize High Court and confirmed that Arana is not employed there.

Police detained Arana on Thursday, May 7, after receiving information that she was at the Belize Complex Building. Authorities say that during a recorded interview conducted in the presence of a Justice of the Peace, Arana admitted taking money from the elderly reitree but claimed the amount was only $1,500. Police also say she acknowledged knowing the woman and confirmed there was an agreement regarding the Grant of Administration process.

Arana was formally charged with obtaining property by deception at the end of Friday, May 8.

She appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6 on Monday morning, where she pleaded not guilty to the charge. With no objection to bail, she was granted bail in the sum of $3,000 plus one surety of the same amount, which she was able to meet.

Her next court date is June 30, 2026, when disclosure is expected to be provided in the matter.

Reporters attempted to get a comment from Arana after she met bail, but she declined to speak.
