By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The controversy surrounding the Rude Boy billboard on Forest Drive in Belmopan continues to grow after residents raised the issue during a recent public meeting in the capital.
The billboard, which advertises the alcoholic beverage and features Trinidadian entertainer Nailah Blackman holding a drink, has sparked debate since it was erected earlier this year.
During the meeting, several residents questioned whether the billboard would be removed, citing concerns about its location and message.
Among the most vocal critics has been Louis Wade Jr., who operates a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program in Belmopan. In a public statement following the meeting, Wade said he continues to support efforts to have the billboard removed and replaced.
Wade argued that his rehabilitation center has worked with hundreds of Belizeans struggling with addiction and that alcohol abuse continues to affect families throughout the country. He also pointed to the work carried out by his church and volunteers in helping individuals battling substance abuse.
According to Wade, the issue is not simply about advertising but about the broader impact alcohol addiction has on families and communities.
Supporters of the billboard, however, argue that it is a legal advertisement promoting a lawful product and that adults should be free to make their own choices.
The debate has divided opinions within Belmopan, with some residents viewing the billboard as inappropriate for the capital city, while others see calls for its removal as unnecessary.
At this time, no official decision has been announced regarding the future of the billboard.
