Theatre lovers are invited to a season of world-class theatre productions as Ster-Kinekor screens a selection from London’s National Theatre Live.
Featuring six live-tapings of critically acclaimed British theatre productions, the programme resumes with three showings of Suzie Miller’s ‘Inter Alia’, starring Rosamund Pike, next week.
‘Inter Alia’ follows screenings of Tennessee Williams’ ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ and Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’.
Audiences can also experience David Ireland’s ‘The Fifth Step’ in September, Nick Dear’s ‘Frankenstein’ in October, and Peter Morgan’s ‘The Audience’ in November.
“With National Theatre Live productions showing on our cinema screens, local audiences get the opportunity to experience some of the best of British theatre in a theatre-like setting as an extension of the live production’s audience,” says Ster-Kinekor’s chief marketing officer Lynne Wylie.
“It is wonderful that we can show these world-class productions from the United Kingdom on our screens for audiences who enjoy and appreciate great theatre.”
‘Inter Alia’ delves into the life of Crown Court judge Jessica Parks, who has made a name for herself presiding over cases concerning sexual violence.
In her personal life, Parks is a devoted wife, caring mother and a karaoke enthusiast, but this balancing act and seemingly exemplary existence is threatened when accusations of sexual violence hit home.
National Theatre Live describes the play as a “searing examination of modern motherhood and masculinity” and praise for Pike is effusive.
While watching theatre at the cinema may seem contrary to the particular thrill of live performance, National Theatre Live takes pains to create an immersive experience.
“We film each play in front of a live theatre audience but optimise everything for the big screen. The actors on stage deliver their performances as they normally would any other night,” says National Theatre Live on its website.
“But to make sure everyone watching in a cinema has the best seat in the house, we tailor the position of our cameras to capture each production and work closely with technical teams to make sure every element on stage, such as lighting, hair and make-up, look fantastic on the big screen.”
‘Inter Alia’ will be showing at Ster-Kinekor at Maerua Mall on 25, 26 and 28 July.
