Blitzboks finish fourth in Bordeaux after sealing Sevens world title

South Africa, who already secured their second successive Sevens World Championship title on Saturday, finished in fourth place at the last tournament of the season, in Bordeax.

The Blitzboks were crowned world champions after securing a spot in the last four in France but the host nation beat them 21-12 in the semi-final while Spain crushed the South Africans 40-points to 14, in the third place play-off.

France then went on to deliver another outstanding performance in the final and beat New Zealand 14-5 to triumph on homesoil.

On Saturday, the Blitzboks, crowned World Series Champions earlier this year, successfully defended their World Championship title by reaching the semifinals.

With their nearest World Championship rivals Argentina unable to secure a quarterfinal spot and Australia knocked out in the round of eight, all the Blitzboks needed to do to secure the World Championship, was to beat Fiji in their quarterfinal match.

It was sweet revenge following defeat earlier in the day, with South Africa recording a come-from-behind 14-12 win over the Pacific Islanders.
