The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued another product safety recall, this time for some Bridgestone tyres.
The Duravis R660 Eco tyres are typically fitted to Ford and some Volkswagen vehicles sold in South Africa. Concerns emerged that the tyres could deteriorate and increase the risk of accidents.
According to the NCC, the recall affects a range of Bridgestone Duravis R660 Eco tyres supplied as original equipment on Ford Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom models manufactured between 2024 and 2025.
The commission says Ford also fitted a small number of the same tyres to Volkswagen vehicles at its manufacturing plant. The affected vehicles were sold and distributed in South Africa between 22 October 2023 and 8 November 2025.
Defects
The NCC says the recall was initiated by Bridgestone Europe after the manufacturer identified a defect that makes the tyres more susceptible to cuts and partial penetrations when driven in rugged and wet conditions.
“These cuts can lead to moisture intrusion and subsequent oxidation of the tyre belt,” the NCC says. The commission warns that this could lead to corrosion and create a separation area within the tyre that may grow over time.
Consumers may notice tyre bulges, tread deformation or additional cuts appearing on the tread surface.
The NCC says extended use of the affected tyres could eventually result in tread delamination, potentially affecting how the vehicle responds to driver input and increasing the risk of an accident.
Quality tests
In a statement, Bridgestone says the issue was identified during ongoing product monitoring and quality assessments.
“In rugged and wet environments, the subject tyre may be more susceptible to cuts and partial penetration. In a small number of cases later in the tyre’s life, this could lead to tread deformation or separation. In isolated cases, rapid air loss could occur,” the company says.
Bridgestone adds: “We are proactively engaging with regulators, partners and customers to organise free of charge replacement of the subject tyres. Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our customers and the integrity of our products.”
The Bridgestone Duravis R660 Eco range is marketed as a premium tyre for commercial vans and light trucks, with a focus on durability, fuel efficiency and wet-weather handling.
Consumers who purchased affected vehicles have been urged to request replacement tyres immediately.
“The NCC encourages all consumers to act quickly when they become aware of a product recall to avoid potential safety risks,” the commission says.
Growing list
The recall is the latest in a growing list of product and vehicle safety notices issued by the commission in recent months.
Earlier this week, the NCC announced the recall of 14 Hyundai vehicles in South Africa over a potential defect involving the driver’s airbag system.
The recall affects Hyundai i30 and Elantra HD models distributed in 2011 after Hyundai Automotive South Africa warned that the driver’s airbag unit in affected vehicles may not function correctly during a collision.
Last month, the NCC also confirmed a safety recall involving 40 Audi e-tron GT vehicles sold in South Africa between 2 November 2021 and 20 March 2026. According to the commission, Audi South Africa warned that a bolted connection between the brake pedal input rod and the brake servo operating rod could come loose.
“If the connection becomes completely detached, braking will only be possible using the controlled emergency braking function,” NCC spokesperson Pheto Ntaba said at the time.
The commission also recalled more than 100 Land Rover Defender and Jaguar I-Pace vehicles last month over separate safety concerns.
