The Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (Nabta) has warned public transport operators not to overcharge passengers and to stick to standard fares.
In a statement released on Monday, the association says no bus and taxi fares have increased yet, despite requests for the government to do so.
Nabta secretary general Pendapala Nakathingo says he has been getting queries from some members of the public, asking whether it was true that the fares have increased.
He says a list circulating on social media bearing the association’s letterhead, with new transport fares is fake and urges passengers to ignore it.
“If motorists are found charging passengers using this fake document anywhere in the country, they will be committing a crime, and it’s a criminal offence in terms of the law,” Nakathingo says.
In addition, another post circulating on social media also claims that the standard taxi fare has increased from N$13 to N$26.
Nakathingo calls on the public to report motorists who are overcharging them to the nearest police station or to any law-enforcement officer immediately.
He urges bus and taxi operators to wait for the government’s approval of increased fares and an official announcement by Nabta.
