CARICOM’s Leadership Tackling Climate, The Ocean And Biodiversity In Special Focus This Week
By CARICOM Photos: CARICOM|Wikimedia Commons Several events centered on CARICOM’s leadership on climate, the ocean and biodiversity will be convened this week by the CARICOM Secretariat in partnership with the Government of Guyana, the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), the United Kingdom Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (UKFCDO) and the German Agency for International Cooperation(GIZ). The events include a special meeting of Ministers of Environment and Sustainable Development, an expert panel discussion, and forums to advance the work of CARICOM Ocean Policy, and a sub-regional centre for Technical and Scientific Cooperation (TSC). The events are being held against the background of the development of the CARICOM Ocean Policy, the operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund, ongoing reform of the international financial architecture, and an intensified global focus on adaptation and ocean governance. The activities will focus on preparations for upcoming international engagements and negotiations, aligning positions and regional priorities. NOTES: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat sub-regional Technical and Scientific Cooperation Centre (CARICOM TSCC) is expected to help fill the gaps in the Region for accessing technical and scientific knowledge, expertise, tools, and other resources for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF). The TSCC will be a “one-stop service centre” for CARICOM Member States which are Parties to biodiversity-related conventions, CARICOM Member Institutions, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs), women and youth organisations, and other relevant stakeholders. The 124th Special Ministerial Meeting of COTED will deliberate on matters including Advancing a Monitoring and Evaluation Framework for the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS; climate change and climate diplomacy, ocean matters and CARICOM Partnerships, Cooperation ad Engagement in International and Hemispheric Environmental Governance Processes The Structured Dialogue will explore issues including Integrated approaches to financing; biodiversity; climate change; oceans; investment; and science and technology.
