Celebrating 70 Years of supporting Barbadian businesses

For 70 years, the Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC) has been helping to shape how we work in Barbados.

Most of us know the BEC for its work on employment matters and industrial relations. But its role goes much deeper. Since 1951, the Confederation has been advocating for fair and modern labour laws, providing training for employers, managers and supervisors, and helping businesses grow and remain strong. 

To mark this milestone, we take a look at the BEC’s journey through the experiences of the people who helped build it.

Former President and Executive Director Ed Bushell and Former Executive Director Tony Walcott reflect on the early days of the organisation, and how it worked through major economic and legislative changes. Current Executive Director Sheena Mayers-Granville talks about why the BEC still matters today. While first BEC Vice President Lisa Ridley-Paul shares how the organisation actually works. Council member Gail Springer looks ahead at a critical area the BEC must tackle to ensure the future viability of its members. 

The feature also highlights key moments in the Confederation’s history including landmark agreements and key partnerships that continue to strengthen workplaces across the island.

BEC officials assure that the organisation will continue to help build resilient businesses, and support workplaces that are productive and sustainable.
