Cecelia Deane Departs as Editorial & Commissioning Executive at BET UK

Cecelia Deane, the editorial and commissioning executive at Paramount Skydance-owned BET UK, has officially exited the company after more than four years shaping the channel’s UK output. Her departure marks a significant leadership change at the Black-focused broadcaster, with broader implications for BET’s UK production slate.

Deane joined BET UK in August 2021, taking the helm of editorial strategy and local commissioning from her base in London. Prior to BET, she worked as a freelance producer on notable UK television programmes including The Rap Game (BBC) and The Only Way Is Essex (ITV).

During her tenure, she oversaw all editorial campaigns, UK content strategy and original commissions, spearheading a series of culturally significant shows that brought Black British stories to screens.

Some of the key programmes she greenlit include:

The Evolution of Black British Music – a factual series celebrating the heritage and cultural impact of Black music in Britain.

Me & My Mum – a docuseries featuring prominent British Black celebrities and their mothers, highlighting their close relationships.

Moments That Shaped Queer Black Britain – a cultural and historical anthology.

The Evolution of Black British Music – following the extraordinary rise of British Black Music in the past thirty years.

She was also executive producer on Mission Motherland, a docuseries tracing Black British identity and ancestral roots that premiered in early 2026 on Channel 5’s streaming platform and BET International’s YouTube channel. The project features prominent UK artists and personalities exploring their heritage and culture.

Deane announced her exit on LinkedIn, stating that she is now open to new work across commissioning, executive production, content strategy and creative leadership.

In her message, she reflected on her time at BET UK: “A chapter ends and another begins. I’m optimistic about what’s next… One of the most valuable aspects of this role has been working across such a wide range of creative talent and businesses… This is legacy work, shining a spotlight on the richness of Black culture, and I’m incredibly proud of it.”

Deane’s departure coincides with BET UK pausing new local original commissions. According to Broadcast magazine, the Paramount-owned channel currently has no new UK-produced shows scheduled, suggesting a potential strategic shift or temporary hiatus in local development.

This landscape shift raises questions about the future of original Black British programming on the channel and where emerging voices might find platforms in the evolving broadcast and streaming ecosystem.

Under Deane’s leadership, BET UK not only developed content but amplified Black British culture, music and identity in mainstream media spaces. Her editorial vision brought diverse stories and historical perspectives to audiences, from affirming community identities to spotlighting cultural heritage through entertainment.

Her influence stretched beyond commissioning to executive production roles that helped bring ambitious documentary series to fruition, contributing to a broader narrative of representation on British screens.
