Three town hall meetings will take place over the next three days, giving the public an opportunity to share feedback on the designs of climate-resilient housing as part of the Green Affordable Housing Project (GAH).
The Government of Saint Lucia launched GAH in 2021 to help make green, climate-resilient housing accessible to low and middle-income households.
As part of the project, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), in collaboration with the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), is assisting the government in mobilising US$7.5 million to execute a pilot project to construct 450 climate-resilient and green-certified homes in Balata, Castries.
The planned homes could feature rainwater harvesting and solar energy generation systems, energy-saving lighting and hurricane-resistant construction.
Proposed community designs are expected to be presented at the town hall meetings.
“The input received will help ensure that the final housing solutions reflect the needs and priorities of future homeowners while supporting sustainable national development,” a statement from GGGI said.
On Monday, April 20, a virtual town hall for the Castries area will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, April 21, there will be a town hall meeting at the Human Resource Development Centre in Gros Islet from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, April 22, a town hall meeting is scheduled for Babonneau Secondary School from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
If completed, an estimated 1,800 Saint Lucians could benefit from the pilot project.
