Watering trees, shrubs, edible plants is still permitted and encouraged even though lawn watering is restricted
AS high summer temperatures and dry conditions persist, the City of Surrey is asking residents to help keep its urban forest healthy by watering City trees near their homes.
Each year, City crews help protect and expand the urban forest by watering nearly 11,000 young shade trees that have been planted over the last five years. But older trees also need support to survive the heat.
Residents are encouraged to help water the more than 115,000 shade trees planted on City property, even during Stage 1 lawn watering restrictions.
“We appreciate residents who are following lawn watering restrictions and doing their best to conserve water,” said urban forestry manager Rob Landucci. “However, it’s important to note that watering trees, shrubs and edible plants is still permitted and encouraged even though lawn watering is restricted. Trees and shrubs are essential to our environment and neighbourhoods. By helping to water them, you are playing a direct role in keeping Surrey green, cool and climate-resilient.”
The City notes that watering trees during longer, hotter summers is not just a kind gesture—it’s a significant act of environmental stewardship that supports Surrey’s livability and sustainability goals. By helping trees survive extreme weather, residents are helping to expand the urban tree canopy. This supports the goals of the City’s Climate Change Action Strategy and Biodiversity Conservation Strategy, which emphasize the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems in urban areas.
