*Ozempic and Wegovy have been celebrated for their ability to transform waistlines, but researchers are now raising concerns about another kind of loss — marriages, Fox News reports.
As GLP-1 drugs continue their rapid rise in popularity, some experts are connecting significant weight loss to climbing divorce rates. The theory isn’t new. Historical data from bariatric surgery patients reveals a striking pattern – those patients were far more likely to end their marriages than the general population, at roughly double the rate. Researchers believe that trend could now repeat itself among the millions of people reaching for prescription weight loss injections.
Per-Arne Svensson, a professor at the Institute of Health and Care Sciences in Sweden, has studied the connection between weight loss and shifting relationship dynamics. He told Fox News Digital that the fallout rarely happens overnight. “The effect likely unfolds in several stages. First, a substantial amount of weight must be lost, which typically occurs within the first year. Subsequently, changes in relationship dynamics may begin to emerge, followed by the legal processes associated with divorce.”
Svensson is careful to note that personality changes or altered brain chemistry are not necessarily driving these splits. Instead, he points to how a transformed body can reshape a person’s entire sense of self and place in the world.
“Weight loss itself may increase a sense of autonomy or confidence, potentially empowering individuals to leave unhealthy relationships,” he said. People who lose substantial weight frequently report taking on more active social lives and drawing newfound attention — a shift that can quietly create distance in a relationship
A 2013 study reinforces this dynamic, finding that uneven weight loss within a couple can stir up insecurity and conflict on the side of the partner who did not change. The news is not all discouraging, though — Svensson notes that weight loss meaningfully improves romantic prospects for single individuals. For couples navigating these changes together, he advocates for a united approach to health goals.
“There may be clear advantages to partners undertaking weight-loss treatment together,” he noted.
