City Hall Gets a Jolt as Black-Owned UnBar Cafe Lands 601 Coffee House
Cleveland City Hall has introduced a new addition to its historic building: 601 Coffee House, a public coffee counter operated in partnership with UnBar Cafe, a Black-owned neighborhood staple.
City officials describe the initiative as a way to make City Hall more welcoming while supporting local entrepreneurs. Framed as “the people’s house,” the project reflects a broader effort to bring community-centered experiences into civic spaces.
A Community-Focused Partnership
The opening was announced through a video shared on the City of Cleveland’s official Facebook page, showcasing the new coffee counter located along a ground-floor corridor.
The space is “powered by UnBar Cafe,” a business known for its strong ties to the Larchmere community and its commitment to programming that centers connection and culture.
According to UnBar Cafe’s website and local business profiles, the café has built its reputation on creating welcoming environments that extend beyond coffee—offering events, conversations, and community engagement.
This new partnership brings that same ethos into City Hall, giving UnBar a presence in downtown Cleveland while aligning with the city’s economic development goals.
Open to the Public
601 Coffee House is open to the general public during standard City Hall hours.
- Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Location: Cleveland City Hall, ground-floor corridor
The accessible setup allows visitors, employees, and residents to experience the space as part of their daily interactions with city government.
Supporting Local Business Growth
City leaders position the coffee counter as part of a broader initiative to integrate local businesses into public institutions.
UnBar Cafe’s track record within the Larchmere neighborhood made it a strong candidate for the pilot, as officials seek to highlight businesses that have demonstrated both community impact and operational success.
The collaboration reflects a growing trend of municipalities partnering with small businesses to enhance public-facing services while creating new economic opportunities.
A Model for Future Partnerships
While modest in scale, 601 Coffee House represents a larger vision for how cities can activate civic spaces.
Officials have described the project as a trial run, with the potential to expand similar partnerships in the future.
By bringing a Black-owned business into one of the city’s most visible public buildings, Cleveland is signaling a commitment to inclusive economic development and community engagement.
As the initiative evolves, it may serve as a model for how local governments can support entrepreneurship while enriching the everyday experience of public spaces.
