Cutest Leopard Cub Caught on Camera Along Mountain Pass

A sweet reminder of how lucky we are to share our natural spaces with spotted cats!

Western Cape, South Africa (20 May 2026) – Local photographer Devin Paisley was driving along a Western Cape mountain pass when he captured magic on video.

Two little leopard cubs suddenly darted across the road, following their mama into the thick bush. One of the curious cubs couldn’t resist stopping. It turned back to peek at the strange, rumbling ‘animal’ driving by before popping back into the fynbos.

It happened in a flash – a flash of cuteness!

The Cape Leopard Trust (CLT) shared the clip. It’s a good dose of adorable, but it also reminds us that these apex predators need our support to stay safe.

Unlike the lions, elephants, buffalo and hippos that once roamed the Western Cape, leopards are the only large predator to have survived there, making them the region’s sole apex predator.

They live at very low densities, fewer than two per 100 square kilometres, and roam territories up to ten times larger than leopards elsewhere in South Africa.

Female leopards raise their cubs entirely alone, and it’s rare for a Cape leopardess to bring more than one cub through to adulthood. Cubs stay with their mothers for up to 18 months before striking out on their own.

The Cape Leopard Trust has been working to protect our spotted cats and the landscapes they call home since 2004, through research, conservation and community education.

“May the enthusiasm for these important apex predators go further than pretty pictures online, and translate into support for organisations dedicated to real conservation impacts.”
