DJ Tunez is AFRIMMA’s Best DJ Africa, and he’s closing Afro Nation 2027
DJ Tunez beat Spinall, Uncle Waffles and Major League DJz to Best DJ Africa at AFRIMMA 2026. Next: closing Afro Nation Portugal 2027 as South Gidi. The post DJ Tunez is AFRIMMA’s Best DJ Africa, and he’s closing Afro Nation 2027 appeared first on The Beats of Africa.
DJ Tunez has spent years making other people’s records land in clubs. On 12 September in Dallas, he got the trophy for it. The Nigerian-American DJ and producer won Best DJ Africa at AFRIMMA 2026. He beat DJ Spinall, Uncle Waffles, DJ Obi, Major League DJz and DJ Kaywise, Channels TV reported.
It’s an award for the part of the business that tests songs before the charts do. DJs decide which records a crowd hears first, and that work rarely shows up in streaming data. It belongs with other roles the industry undervalues, such as the hype man.
The shortlist he beat said a lot about where the scene is. Spinall has moved into headline releases, including “Sere” with Fireboy DML. Uncle Waffles broke through with a viral clip and now plays amapiano around the world. Major League DJz represent South Africa‘s scene. Nigerian club DJs and South African piano names now compete in one category. The line between the sounds keeps blurring, a question we raised about two recent hits: are they amapiano or Afrobeats?
Channels TV tied the win to Tunez’s long relationship with Wizkid’s Starboy Entertainment. His own records draw on the same network. His 2020 single “Pami” put Wizkid, Omah Lay and Adekunle Gold on one track, with production from Blaisebeatz. A DJ who can bring three stars onto one song is doing an executive’s job as well.
The setting suited the prize. AFRIMMA returned to Dallas after a two-year break and moved to Annette Strauss Square. It doubled as a festival, with food vendors and fashion brands on site. For a category about performance, a live crowd is the right judge.
His next big booking makes the same point on a European stage. Tunez joins DJ Maphorisa as South Gidi on Afro Nation Portugal’s 2027 LIT Stage. They close the final night of the festival, which runs from 9 to 11 June in Praia da Rocha. A Nigerian DJ and a South African producer will end the weekend together. Presale opens on Tuesday 29 September at 10am BST. Heading to Portimão? See our Afro Nation boat party and last year’s festival guide.
