Former Police Superintendent Sulayman Jeng has further strengthened his presence on the literary scene with the publication of three new books under the Daily Observer Press, marking a significant new chapter in his writing journey.
The three titles — The Unknown President, The Stolen Bride: A Novel, and My Best Friend’s Daughter: A Novel — showcase his versatility and deepen his engagement with contemporary issues, human relationships and the complexities of society. Only a few months earlier, Jeng published his first book, The Shadow of the Mansa, bringing his total number of published books to four.
All four books were edited by Daily Observer editor Kebeli Demba Nyima. Three of the books — The Unknown President, The Stolen Bride: A Novel, and My Best Friend’s Daughter: A Novel — were published under the Daily Observer Press, while The Shadow of the Mansa was published under a UK-based publishing firm.
Four Books, Four Different Worlds
Jeng’s new releases reflect a wide range of themes and perspectives, moving effortlessly from political intrigue to social drama and intimate human stories. Each book offers a distinct narrative, yet all are rooted in a deep understanding of people, society and the forces that shape our lives.
The Unknown President
The Unknown President is a politically themed work that delves into power, leadership and governance. The novel offers a compelling exploration of ambition, authority and the burdens that come with public office. Through a gripping narrative, Jeng examines the moral dilemmas faced by those in positions of power and the profound impact their decisions have on ordinary citizens.
The Stolen Bride: A Novel
The Stolen Bride: A Novel turns to fiction and tells a dramatic story shaped by emotion, social pressure, cultural tension and personal conflict. The novel draws readers into a world where tradition, love and individual choice collide, creating a powerful and moving narrative about the costs of conformity and the courage it takes to follow one’s heart.
My Best Friend’s Daughter: A Novel
In My Best Friend’s Daughter: A Novel, Jeng explores love, loyalty, moral struggle and the expectations that often shape private lives. The novel examines the delicate boundaries of friendship and desire, and the complex decisions that can test relationships and personal values. It is a thoughtful and emotionally engaging story that resonates with readers across generations.
The Shadow of the Mansa
Jeng’s first book, The Shadow of the Mansa, was published a few months earlier and introduced readers to a rich historical narrative. Set against a backdrop of empire, heritage and leadership, the book explores the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s most iconic rulers and the timeless lessons his story holds for today.
A Growing Voice in Gambian Literature
Jeng’s four books represent an important milestone, not only in his personal journey but also for Gambian writing and local publishing. His rapid output and the diversity of his work demonstrate the strength of home-grown talent and the growing capacity of local platforms such as the Daily Observer Press to support and promote Gambian authors.
Speaking about his work, Jeng has often expressed his belief in the power of stories to inform, challenge and inspire. His transition from a distinguished career in law enforcement to becoming a prolific author has been widely welcomed, with readers praising his ability to bring real-world experience, cultural insight and human empathy into his fiction and non-fiction writing.
The publication of three new books in such a short space of time, following the success of The Shadow of the Mansa, signals a remarkable period of productivity and a deep commitment to storytelling. It also highlights the important role of the Daily Observer Press, under the editorial guidance of Kebeli Demba Nyima, in nurturing Gambian voices and contributing to a vibrant and evolving literary culture.
Jeng’s success is being seen as a positive sign for the growth of Gambian literature and the increasing capacity of local publishing.
