Amid growing reports of a fallout, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and Super League of Malawi (Sulom) have said they are enjoying a sound relationship.
In an interview on Thursday, FAM president Fleetwood Haiya said: “Sulom is and remains an affiliate of FAM and we continue to enjoy a cordial working relationship.

On the other hand, Sulom president Gilbert Mittawa said: “Our relationship with FAM was and is still good.
“We have no issues with FAM or its leadership and we remain committed to the development of football.”
The relationship between the two bodies got a stern test last month following a rift over the use of Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre for the FDH Premiership launch after FAM stood its ground, insisting that the facility had been barred from hosting elite matches.
Although Sulom insisted on hosting the launch and the opening game between champions Mighty Wanderers and Karonga United at the facility, the event was postponed leading to the suspension of all FDH Bank plc sponsorships by the sponsor the following day which was lifted a fortnight later.
Sulom apologised to FDH Bank, FAM, government, the fans and clubs.
But despite the apology, FAM says it will not drop disciplinary charges against Sulom for insubordination.
Behind the scenes, there have been reports that FAM is planning to abolish Sulom and that Haiya met regional associations’ chairpersons in Lilongwe recently where he asked them for their views.
A source confided in Weekend Nation that the FAM boss said he was not happy that Sulom was undermining FAM.
“So, he said they were thinking of abolishing Sulom, but the chairperson of Southern Region Football Association Mr [Dyles] Kachala said that would affect his [Haiya] popularity and, in the end, the FAM president said he would leave the matter since it was already under the disciplinary committee,” said the source.
But Haiya dismissed the claims saying: “Ordinarily, whenever I invite affiliates to a FAM function, I take time to meet them. On this occasion, I further extended the invitation for them to escort me on a visit to [Central Region Football Association] chairperson [Goodall] Chinjoka’s wife, who is currently bedridden.”
Kachala could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Mittawa said he could not comment on the matter.
“Maybe you can ask FAM about the plans to abolish Sulom as we do not know anything. Or perhaps you can ask those who attended the meeting as to what their plans are,” he said.
